CVT Automatic Gearbox (GACVT16Z) Common Problems
The CVT automatic is known for its poor reliability compared to traditional automatic transmissions.
Known Issues:
- Erratic shifting: Often caused by internal valve body faults
- Electrical problems: May originate from the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or ECU
- “Lifetime” oil myth: MINI claimed no service was needed, but regular fluid changes are essential

⚙️ What Gearboxes Do We Supply?
We stock and supply the following options for the R50 MINI ONE and Cooper:
- ✅ Used and reconditioned Midland gearboxes
- ✅ Used and reconditioned Getrag gearboxes
- ✅ Used CVT automatic gearboxes (when available)
Quick Visual Identification:
- Midland: Clutch arm and slave cylinder on top of gearbox, under the air filter box
- Getrag: Clutch arm and slave cylinder on the bottom/front near the radiator
- CVT: The only automatic option available for MINI ONE and Cooper models — if your R50 is an auto, it has the CVT gearbox.
